Air handling units (AHU's) do not always function as planned: airflow rates are often larger than required, the recirculation rate is not at its set-point value and parasitic shortcuts sometimes decrease dramatically the ventilation efficiency.
The purpose of heat exchanger is to transfer heat from exhaust to supply part of the AHU. This heat should be transferred in the most possible efficient way, without transferring contaminants. The diagnosis should characterise the performance of the exchanger.
The methodology and the software DAHU was developed with the scope of simplifying the measurements of ventilation flowrates, energy and exergy global efficiencies, heat exchanger efficiency, fan power efficiency and the use of the tracer gas measurement technique. The program will help IAQ engineers and ventilation professionals to measure air handling units. The program summarises several years of experience including diagnosis of more than 30 units. DAHU is a new design tool for AHU’s analysis, which covers the need of a simple but complete method of diagnosis.
