New E4tech assessment of trade-offs between demand-side management and energy efficiency

Switzerland has set ambitious efficiency targets to help it meet its 2050 energy goals. The Swiss Federal Office of Energy (SFOE) wanted to understand if efficiency might in fact be reduced by flexible demand-side management (DSM) causing energy intensive processes to be run in suboptimal operation modes.

E4tech reviewed commercial and industrial DSM potential in Switzerland and identified representative examples for detailed case studies. We interviewed industry experts and analysed operation patterns – before and after DSM implementation – for cement mills, deep-freeze warehouses, and waste-water treatment plants, looking at the expected impacts on efficiency.

You can download the final report (in German, with abstracts in English and French), which contains application-specific recommendations and an informed discussion of the trade-offs between DSM and energy efficiency, intended to help guide policy.
