Paving the way to a bio-based future for the European chemical industry

What are the opportunities for bio-based raw materials in the European chemical industry? The EU project RoadToBio publishes a roadmap to deliver opportunities to replace fossil products by bio-based products that have the same or superior functionality.

The RoadToBio project identified opportunities for bio-based platform chemicals and dedicated chemicals based on likely demand drivers using market analysis and stakeholder interviews. It analysed in detail opportunities and barriers to supply bio-based chemicals in nine product groups (plastics/polymers, solvents, surfactants, man-made fibres, adhesives, cosmetics, paints & coatings, lubricants and agrochemicals). The outcome is a roadmap with short, mid, and long-term actions that could contribute to realising a European bioeconomy which would deliver significant reductions in carbon emissions, increased energy and resource efficiency, and create a strong competitive position for the EU chemical industry in decades to come. A wide range of actors across the chemical industry, policy makers and NGOs have been involved throughout the project via surveys, interviews and workshops.

The project was delivered by a consortium of four partners: E4tech (UK) Ltd., DECHEMA Gesellschaft für Chemische Technik und Biotechnologie e.V., BTG Biomass Technology Group B.V., and nova-Institut für politische und ökologische Innovation GmbH. The key deliverables of the project are:
