Technology Innovation Needs Assessment – Bioenergy

This report is a Technology Innovation Needs Assessment (TINA) prepared for the Low Carbon Innovation Co-ordination Group (LCICG), in order to identify and value the key innovation needs in the UK bioenergy sector.

The report concludes that bioenergy is a promising renewable energy source which could contribute significantly to UK gas, power, transport fuel and heat demands, while its actual uptake is subject to significant innovation and market uncertainties. It is shown that increasing the availability of sustainable feedstocks is an important requirement across a wide range of scenarios.

The value of innovation to the UK from reducing energy system costs is calculated to be £42bn, and international business development is calculated to provide a further £19bn to the UK. Significant market barriers are identified which could restrict the UK from realising these domestic savings and international markets.
