Bioenergy and hydrogen & fuel cells identified as key areas for UK Government innovation support

Where should the UK invest to enable decarbonisation of our energy system? A new report identifies bioenergy, and hydrogen and fuel cells as key areas where innovation support could help reduce costs and accelerate deployment. Bioenergy is important in producing fuels for hard to decarbonise sectors such as aviation and shipping, and in enabling negative emissions through Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage. Investing in the deployment of early commercial gasification based plants, and building on the UK’s expertise in Miscanthus breeding and use, were identified as areas that the UK government should support. In hydrogen and fuel cells, bringing down the cost of both electrolysers and fuel cells through advanced manufacturing techniques and lower cost materials were identified as focus areas, to enable their widespread use in hydrogen production and transport.


The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) commissioned the Energy Innovation Needs Assessment (EINA) programme to help them prioritise public investment in low carbon innovation across the energy system. This work played an important role in underpinning the case for UK Government investment in energy innovation, based upon potential for cost reduction and areas where the UK could have a competitive advantage. To do this, an evidence-based approach involving energy system modelling and expert stakeholder workshops was carried out by consortium led by Vivid Economics. E4tech took the lead on 3 key areas (click to access reports): Biomass and Bioenergy , Hydrogen and Fuel Cells and Road Transport . E4tech’s role was to provide evidence on the key challenges faced by technologies in these sectors and ways these could be overcome, by combining our deep expertise with our extensive network to conduct validation workshops with key experts.
