IATA supports E4tech report on aviation biofuels

The International Air Transport Association, IATA, states that biofuels offer the greatest hope for aviation to reach carbon emissions targets and that government support for the industry could be crucial. An E4tech report for the UK Committee on Climate Change in 2009 identified a significant potential for use of sustainable biofuels in aviation if technologies continue to be developed. E4tech’s estimate for the penetration of biofuels in the aviation fuel mix in 2050 is as high as 85% - given favourable conditions. Several biofuel test flights have taken place, and Finnair and Lufthansa recently announced that they aim to become the first airlines to use biofuels on commercial flights.
