Last week the European Investment Bank has granted a €75M loan to ArcelorMittal for the construction of two ground-breaking projects at ArcelorMittal’s steel-making site in Ghent, Belgium: Steelanol and Torero. The Steelanol consortium, comprised of ArcelorMittal, Lanzatech, Primetals and E4tech, will construct an industrial-scale demonstration plant for the production of ethanol from the steel mill blast furnace gas, using Lanzatech’s fermentation technology. Under the Torero project a large-scale demonstration plant will be constructed to convert waste wood into bio-coal to partially replace the coal currently used in the blast furnace.
The Bioenergy for Sustainable local energy services and Energy Access in Africa (BSEAA) programme, a constituent programme of the UK Department for International Development’s (DFID) Transforming Energy Access (TEA) programme is holding a webinar on “Key trends in commercial bioenergy development in Sub-Saharan Africa” to be held on 27th of May, 2020 from 11.00 am– 12 pm (BST). E4tech, as part of the wider BSEAA2 team, has taken the lead in identifying and assessing viable business models that could accelerate bioenergy deployment.
E4tech, together with Cerulogy, the ICCT, Navigant, SCS and Wageningen UR, is supporting the European Commission with the identification of potential candidate feedstocks for inclusion in Annex IX of the Renewable Energy Directive, following a detailed assessment against set sustainability criteria.

With the seventh annual UK Future Powertrain Conference just completed it’s interesting to take stock of how researchers and industry have viewed the future of vehicle propulsion over the years. Back in 2014 the event’s main focus was on improving the internal combustion engine, whilst electrification was a minority theme. Over the years the focus has steadily shifted, but 2020 saw the biggest change as net zero goals put batteries and hydrogen high up the agenda. The fuel cell session was standing-room only, hydrogen was mentioned in almost every session – especially for large vehicles where hydrogen combustion also regained profile - and batteries were accepted by many as the technology of choice for light duty.
