EU 2030 Road Transport Decarbonisation Analysis

In 2014 the Brazilian Sugarcane Industry Association (UNICA) commissioned E4tech to evaluate the potential for decarbonising the road transport sector to 2030 and assess the potential role of policies such as the Fuel Quality Directive (FQD). The study was very timely in the light of the recent EU 2030 Energy and Climate Package proposals that do not contain a specific transport sector target. Our report shows that a higher ‘FQD’ target to 2030 is achievable through reduction in fuel demand and alternative fuels, biofuels in particular, and would provide the necessary signal to encourage further road transport emissions reductions beyond efficiency gains and maintain biofuels as an option for deep decarbonisation in the period to 2050.
